Straight from the heart, The Baker Suites’ cinematic storytelling creates a seductive and potent world. Lush instrumentation carries the listener through elegant ballads, gypsy romantica and a lurching night waltz in the rain. 

Often performing as a duo, The Baker Suite are: John Baker (guitar/vocals) and Gayle Buckby (accordion/ vocals). Between them, they cite influences as Leonard Cohen, Paul Simon, Sting, Yann Tiersen, Tom Waits, Bach and T.S. Elliot. They’re sometimes joined by John Aué on double bass, BJ Barker on drums and Karen DeNardi on viola.

The Baker Suites’ latest album, A Quartet for Car Horns and Brakes' was produced by Australian jazz icon Paul Grabowsky, and released in 2010. Since then, the band has toured nationally and internationally to sold out shows and standing ovations. 

Festival appearances include; Adelaide Festival of Arts, Okayama Cultural Festival (JP), Nelson Arts Festival (NZ), International Guitar Festival (AU) and The National Folk Festival (Au). 2012 will see them perform at festivals in Russia and Czech Republic plus shows throughout Germany.  They have opened for Elton John, Kate Ceberano, Archie Roach & Ruby Hunter, Vika and Linda Bull, Francoiz Breut (Fr), Mary Gauthier (USA) and The Audreys.

Adelaide’s John Baker trades in subtlety and nuance. The oddity is that he does this while making pop music. His lyrics have that hazy, oneiric quality you feel when awaking in the morning convinced you’ve already been up, and the last dream was real. The music echoes the words in this regard. Bakers voice is fragile and wispy, so final consonants fade to oblivion amid Gayle Buckby’s gentle backing vocals and the swishing accompaniment. The latter is all class, with Paul Grabowsky playing piano, contributing to the arrangements and producing the album. Brilliant guitarist Stephen Magnusson adds his own layers of mystery over the relaxed rhythm section and swooning violas. Pithy pop for thinking people.
