NED COLLETTE A singer and songwriter whose literate, evocative songs are paired with music that's both adventurousand eclectic, Ned Collette was born in Melbourne, Australia, on September 6, 1979. Collette grew uplearning the power of both music and words – his father was a sometime operatic baritone, while hismother was a writer who also taught university-level English. In 2002 he completed an honoursdegree in improvised music and composition, and during this time founded City City City, aseven-piece band whose work covered areas of minimalism, improvisation and pop. They touredextensively in Australia and New Zealand and released two albums: 2004's ‘Dawn and The Blue LightDistrict’, and 2005's ‘The Perimeter Motor Show’. He also helped found and run Melbourne’s Make ItUp Club – now one of the longest running weekly forums for experimental music in the world.Ned’s first solo album – 'Jokes and Trials’ – came out in 2006, earning enthusiastic reviews andcomparisons to Leonard Cohen and Robert Wyatt. After tours with Joanna Newsom and Bill Callahanhe returned with ‘Future Suture’, which focused less on first-person confessional tales and more onstorytelling. Collette began giving his backing musicians equal billing with 2009's ‘Over the Stones,Under the Stars’, with bassist Ben Bourke and drummer Joe Talia credited as Wirewalker. The albumwas a departure towards more sparse, rock-based arrangements, but still contained extendedpassages of improvisation. Ned having now relocated to Berlin, 2012 and 2014 saw the release ‘2’and ‘Networking In Purgatory’ respectively with Fire Records and Bronze Rat Records internationally.Wirewalker toured Japan in 2013, and the development of deeper experimental work within theirsound saw critical praise extended from such outlets as The Wire, The Quietus, Drowned In Sound, and Rolling Stone.Concurrently with all of this Ned has continued to work in improvised and art music contexts. In 2016he was commissioned by the Letter String Quartet to write a quintet for strings, voices andsynthesizer. It was premiered at the Melbourne Recital Centre in November of that year. He continuesto collaborate in recorded and concert settings with such artists as Anthea Caddy, Judith Hamann,Anthony Pateras, Erkki Veltheim, Chris Abrahams, Mick Turner, Francis Plagne, and Will Guthrie.Ned also has a long standing and prolific collaborative partnership with percussionist, electro-acousticmusician and producer Joe Talia, who has contributed to every major release in Ned’s catalogue. ‘Old Chestnut’ – the sixth album under Collette’s name – will come out on August 24th, 2018, andthough it is ostensibly a solo record, it features his Wirewalker bandmates as well as contributionsfrom Anthea Caddy and The Necks’ Chris Abrahams. ‘Old Chestnut’ also marks his first release inpartnership with Melbourne indie/underground label It Records and US label Feeding Tube. Fredrik Kinbom is a Swedish lap steel player/multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter based in Berlin. Since first picking up the lap steel in 2005, his original style and sound has led to recording and/or international touring with acclaimed acts like Gemma Ray, Gurrumul, Alberta Cross, Moulettes and Ned Collette. His second solo album with the lap steel in focus, Oil (Capstan Records, 2014), received much critical praise. He has contributed as a co-writer to albums by Sarah Blasko and Gemma Ray, and has since Oil released two albums with his theatrical side project Kinbom & Kessner (featuring a stellar cast of guests like James Williamson (Iggy & The Stooges) and members of Moulettes, Hazmat Modine and Augie March). Fredrik mainly plays the lap steel slide guitar, but the way he plays it sounds nothing like the Hawaiian, blues or country sound most people would associate with the lap steel. He really creates his own sonic universe.
